The story began on Saturday, May 1 - 6, 2010.
The usual spew of vomit resulted in a stripping down & washing of the little girl. We noticed Rachel had developed a swollen lump on her chest/ribs that protruded more when she was upset. At first we thought it was a bug bite as she had spent a few hours outside the day before. She didn’t seem to be bothered by the lump but being a scared new mommy, I called and asked the Dr anyway. We were told to keep an eye on it and go to the ER if she developed a fever or starting acting funny. Over the weekend she seemed fine and the lump was just a little larger than a quarter.
On the Monday I took her myself to the pediatrician to have a look at it while Andrew watched David. Dr Golub was immediately shocked at the size, rushed out of the room and came back saying she had arranged for us to go to Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte immediately. (Begin mommy freak out - NOW!) The lump was later diagnosed as an abscess from MRSA. We rushed home & packed our things and went to the hospital, panicked at how quickly things were set to happen.
The surgeon put her on antibiotics overnight but there was no improvement. We then waited for a surgery slot that ended up being on the Wednesday May 5. It was only a 20 minute procedure but the build up to the whole thing was extremely stressful for us. Of course, she was put under general anesthesia and did just fine. She was given some morphine to make her feel better after she woke up in pain. Rachel had no issues at all with the anesthesia. The wound looks gruesome but we’re told the scar will eventually be small. We spent 4 days / 3 nights in the hospital and made it home on the Thursday. She is obviously sore and we give her Tylenol but otherwise she seems OK.
The irony is that David was the fussier of the two the entire time.
